It’s a New Year – Press the Reset Button

Happy New Year! Do you notice the yearly trend? It seems that every January we are flooded with fitness commercials, new diet ads, and the latest and greatest ways to lose weight and live a happier life. My question to you is: Why wait until January 1st to make a change?

Start today by hitting the reset button with these simple tips:

Clean eating – Don’t fall for the gimmicks of losing weight, instead make a conscious decision to eat healthier. Choose fruits over sugary snacks. Choose cleaner foods versus processed foods. Making simple changes in your daily diets will render huge results. Not only will you lose inches but you will gain energy and reduce stress. Eliminate the quick and easy processed junk and get back to clean eating which basically requires daily planning and contribution from the entire family. You can do it!

Write it down – How often do you forget what you planned for the day, week or month? Instead of forgetting, write it down. Don’t just write in on a piece of paper that you may lose. Write it where you and your family will see it and remember such as a family calendar located in a central location or a chalk or white board that you and everyone else will see. This simple task will keep you on track.

Lace up – Why join a gym that you will visit perhaps 4 to 6 times and never see again? Instead, lace up your walking or running shoes and walk. Commit to walking your neighborhood at least 3 times a week. Use the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator. These are not earth shattering tips but tips that are often overlooked. Ask a friend to join you in your weekly walks. Having someone to talk with and exercise with will help you stay motivated and also keep you accountable.

Moderation – Every year many will set resolutions that will be naturally broken within 6 weeks or less. Instead of setting yourself up for failure, choose to make small changes at a time. This is the concept of moderation. When you make small changes and begin to implement them your body and mind will adapt more easily. If your goal is to lose weight, start with a small goal such as 3 to 5 pounds. Once reached, celebrate and reset your goals. If your goal is to be more active, start with walking around the block and move up from that point. If you choose large goals or resolutions they will be more difficult to achieve and your entire outlook will be poor. Moderation is the key to success.

Me time – It is essential to schedule some ‘me time’ into your daily routine. It can consist of 10 minutes or 30 minutes as long as you are able to unplug and simply relax. This short time will help you re-energize yourself for the day or activity you are involved in at the moment. If this is something you have neglected, now is the time to begin to implement this necessary ‘break’ time. Do not schedule ‘me time’ to plan or clean or answer emails…that is not what ‘me time’ is defined as. During this short time break, you must learn to stop and merely enjoy and appreciate your surroundings. Is this difficult to do? Absolutely not! Just like anything else you must do it each and every day until it becomes a habit, a healthy habit.

Mindset – This one is huge! Perhaps it may be the most important tip of this entire list! Why? Because if you wake up in a poor mood, then your entire day and those around you will suffer. Your energy level will be lowered and you can forget about getting anything positive accomplished. Instead of focusing on the negative, flip it to something better. You may be thinking to yourself, that it is easier said than done, but I challenge you to try it. If you want your environment to change then you must change, it won’t happen any other way. Don’t believe me? Try staying angry with a smile on your face. Not only will you look foolish but you won’t have any other choice but to change your attitude and emotions. Change YOU and those around you will begins with your mindset.

These tips are not new and perhaps you may have read them elsewhere. The point of this message is to give you ‘real’ advice that you can implement today and see results. Setting the reset button can and should occur each day. Why wait until January 1st to make a change in your lifestyle? Start today and if you don’t succeed, don’t beat yourself up. Instead pull up your  big girl pants and start again!
