Managing Your Stress During The Holidays

It’s that time of the year again! The time when folks let the excitement and fast pace of the holiday season affect their stress levels. It’s perfectly understandable that stress levels will rise during this time of year but if you can learn to manage your stress you will enjoy this season much more.

First, you must understand that stress is normal and every person experiences it. Although it may not be realistically possible to eliminate stress, it is possible to reduce and manage stress.

Second, in order to manage your stress, you must be aware of what causes the most stress. For instance, don’t let the competition that the holidays tend to bring on affect you. What do I mean by this? If your neighbor goes overboard with decorations, you don’t have to try to compete. I know you may feel the need to decorate but honestly, why cause yourself more stress by trying to compete with the neighbors? Instead, limit your decorations and your stress level will be decreased. Remember that less is more.

Another tip I will share with you is one that will help you enjoy the holidays more. Of course it may be difficult for you to do this but it will help in reducing your stress level. This particular tip can be found in one of my 21 Ways book called 21 Ways to Enjoy a Stress-Free Holiday Season.

The tip is called: Pass the Torch. It’s time to lower your expectations and you must learn to pass the torch. Yes, it’s okay for you to allow others to help. Let your family help with the cooking, decorating, wrapping and more. Most importantly, let someone else play Santa. Allow others around you to join in on the fun. Allow them to organize the gifts under the tree and on Christmas morning let them hand out the gifts. Notice the important word in this particular tip? If you guessed, ‘allow’ then you are correct. Allowing others to help you will certainly help to reduce your stress and more importantly give you the time necessary to enjoy your family during the holiday season.

To manage your stress successfully make sure to plan ahead. Don’t wait until the last minute because stress will definitely be an issue. Don’t over commit to all the parties and activities that the holidays bring. You will survive this holiday season with little stress and enjoy the true meaning when you keep your stress level in check.
