Resolutions Do Matter: Exercising in the New Year

Well, the holidays are over, and 2013 has begun in all its glory.  If you’re like many of us, one of the resolutions that you’ve made is to get healthier.  If this includes exercising more, there are lots of ways to make sure that your commitment to the resolution stick.  Here are a few tips to help:

  1. Get into a Routine:  One of the easiest ways to keep exercising beyond the initial first blush drive is to get yourself into a routine.  Pick a time every day to do something exercise related.  Personally, I love doing tai chi first thing in the morning, as soon as the sun starts rising over my garden fence.  You might go for an evening stroll after dinner, or perhaps a few minutes on the stair master after the kids have gone to bed would work for you.  It’s also important not to fall into the trap of giving your exercise time away to more “urgent” or important things.  If you are too sick to exercise, spend that time meditating, or simply taking some me time.  After all, this is about getting you healthy, right?
  2. Get Specific:  When most people make resolutions for the New Year, they tend to be very general.  Statements such as “I will exercise more” or “I promise to lose weight” or “Get healthier” are wonderful ideals, but lack quite a bit in practicality.  You know what you want to do – so how exactly are you going to do it?  Be specific.  Instead of saying that you are going to exercise more, say something like “I’m going to spend five additional minutes a day doing stretching exercises,” or “By February 1st I will be enrolled in and enjoying a weight training program.”  Don’t worry about the amount of weight you’re going to lose, or even meeting a generalized health goal.  Instead, focus on the logistics and mechanics of what you are going to do.   You’ll find that the health benefits and weight management goals will be met along the way.
  3. Get a buddy:  Let’s be honest.  There will be times in the coming months when the idea of exercising will be the most unattractive idea you’ve ever seen.  The track that you run on will be muddy.  There will be a special on television starring your favorite actor.  That old couch will look like the most inviting place to sleep in the universe.  So what is a person to do when their willpower and commitment to exercising is under attack by such evil foes?  Simple- they call in for reinforcements.  Having a friend, family member, even a coworker who has the authority to kick your behind off the couch and exercise with them is a great way to keep on track.  Not only can exercising with a friend help you to keep your routine, but it is also a great way to learn new things, get a little motivation, and even get a heads-up when things might be going a little wrong.

    Nice post Laura. The secret is to not bite off more than you can chew. Small lasting changes are much more effective than trying to do a complete makeover that lasts for a week.
