When you veer off the Healthy Highway…

Winding Road to Mountains

We’ve all done it.  You’re are cruising along the Healthy Highway, putting lots of delicious, good-for-you stuff in your body, drinking your water, indulging in green smoothies.  But then it happens.  You are invited to a birthday party.  The setting and the food are intoxicating.  And, you cave.  Pizza, chips, and soda, topped off with a triple layer chocolate cake.  Oh, and don’t forget the ice cream.

Sound familiar?

You took a major detour off the Healthy Highway into Junk Food City.  And, you enjoyed it…for the moment.  But, then, as soon as the sugar high wore off, you sank into a lethargic sea of self-ridicule and guilt.  “Why, oh why, did I do that?  I was doing so well!  See, I can’t do this healthy thing.  It’s impossible.  So, why even try.  I guess I’m just destined to be overweight and chronically ill.  It’s my lot in life.  Whatever.  I’m done with this health stuff.”

Please don’t be so defeated!  Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, hop back on that Healthy Highway and continue on your journey.  I’m going to give you a few steps that will make getting back on the right road much easier.

  1. Progress.  “Progress, not perfection.”  Remember that little saying.  Perfection leads to failure and a lifetime of frustration.  Nobody’s perfect.  Give yourself some grace.   Feel better?
  2. Balance.  For every unhealthy choice you make, make a really healthy choice to go with it.  So, if you overdo it at a birthday party, have a green smoothie that night and focus on really healthy choices the next day.
  3. Grace.  Love yourself.  Don’t beat yourself up.  That only makes things worse.  Just evaluate what you ate and why you ate it, and move on.  Don’t live in the past.  Don’t berate yourself.  Negative self talk is no good for your body or spirit.
  4. Support.  Health is much easier, and much more fun, if you have a friend who is supporting you, loving you, challenging you, and holding you accountable.  And, she will help you hop back on the Healthy Highway, lickity-split!  It’s easier to make good choices when someone else is in the trenches with you.  So, find a Healthy Buddy and cruise together to a healthier, and happier, life.

Remember that life is long.  Don’t stress about a poor choice.  You will have plenty of opportunity to make a better choice in the near future.  (The flip side to this is that sometimes you can make so many excuses, you’ll never reach your healthiest life.  That’s a whole different post.  If you find yourself making excuse after excuse, evaluate why and what steps you’ll take to move in the right direction.)  But, occasional detours are no reason to fret.  Just hop back on the Healthy Highway and enjoy the ride!

I always allow myself 1 day a week (Saturday) to eat what I want. Usually I can hold off till then, but I “veer of the highway” every once in a while.
